Marathon Run Museum

The Marathon Road Promotion Centre opened its doors in 2004 and is housed in the historic primary school of Marathon, a building built in 1908 with a donation from the national benefactor Andreas Syngrou.

It hosts the permanent exhibition “Olympic Marathons”, a donation from the Olympic Museum of Lausanne. The exhibition presents the history of the Marathon race through photographs and texts, and since 2007 it has evolved into a sports museum, hosting relics of top marathon runners.

The museum’s collection includes more than 4,000 exhibits documenting the history of the Marathon race from 1896 to the present day. The exhibition is divided into two sections: the first presents the history of the Olympic Marathons, while the second documents the global marathon movement, with thematic sections dedicated to marathons around the world, Olympic champions, women’s participation and runners’ equipment.
